One of the hardest questions people ask is: If God is good and powerful, why does He allow suffering? We see pain in the world—poverty, disease, injustice, natural disasters—and we experience pain in our own lives. In moments of grief and struggle, it is natural to ask: Where is God? Does He care?

This question is not just intellectual; it is deeply personal. And while no answer removes the pain completely, the Bible does give us hope and perspective that no other worldview can offer.

What the World Says

Different religions and philosophies try to explain suffering in their own ways:

  • Some say suffering is the result of bad karma from this or a previous life.
  • Others see it as an illusion, something to be escaped by detaching from desire.
  • Some think of it as simply fate or destiny—something we must accept without question.
  • Many modern people believe suffering is meaningless, the result of chance in a broken world.

These views may give partial explanations, but they often leave us without comfort, without justice, or without hope.

What the Bible and Jesus Say

The Bible teaches that suffering entered the world because of sin. When humanity turned away from God, the world became broken—physically, morally, and spiritually (Genesis 3). That is why we experience pain, sickness, and death.

But the Bible also shows us a God who does not remain distant from suffering. Jesus entered into our pain. He experienced hunger, betrayal, grief, and even death on a cross. Through His suffering, He took our sin upon Himself and opened the way to eternal life where there will be no more suffering.

The Bible promises that God can bring good out of suffering. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” He uses trials to shape us, strengthen us, and draw us closer to Him. And one day, He will end suffering completely: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4).

The cross shows us that God cares, and the resurrection shows us that suffering will not have the final word.

Your Next Step

We may not understand every reason for suffering, but we can know this: God is with us in it, and He offers hope beyond it. Jesus entered our suffering so that one day we can enter His joy.
