One of the most important questions that can be asked is who is God? Across cultures, people have wrestled with whether God exists, what He is like, and whether we can know Him personally. Some deny God, some worship many gods, and some simply live without thinking much about Him. But deep down, most of us sense there must be something—or Someone—greater than ourselves.

What the World Says

Different worldviews offer different answers:

  • Some say there are millions of gods, each with their own power and role.
  • Others insist there is no god at all—that the universe is all there is.
  • Many imagine God as distant and unknowable, leaving us to figure life out on our own.

These perspectives reflect human searching, but they leave us unsure about who God really is and what He wants from us.

What the Bible and Jesus Say

The Bible does not present God as a distant power or vague force. Instead, it reveals Him as a personal, loving Creator who made us and wants a relationship with us. Through Jesus, we see God clearly—His love, holiness, and saving power. Here are four truths about who God is:

  • God is the Creator – He is the source of all life. Everything we see—nature, the universe, even our own lives—exists because of Him. We are not accidents, but intentionally created by God in His image. (Genesis 1:1)
  • God is Love – His very nature is love. Unlike distant or uncaring gods, the true God loves us deeply and perfectly. He desires a real relationship with us, like a Father with His children. (1 John 4:16)
  • God is Holy – God is pure, perfect, and set apart from sin. His holiness shows us His greatness and our need for forgiveness to draw near to Him. (Isaiah 6:3)
  • God is the Savior – God did not leave us in our sin and brokenness. Through Jesus, He entered our world to save us, offering forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope to all who believe. (Luke 19:10)

Knowing who God is changes everything. He is not far away—He invites us to know Him personally through Jesus.
