Anger is a powerful emotion. It can rise quickly, cloud judgment, and hurt the people around us. While everyone gets angry at times, uncontrolled anger can damage relationships, bring regret, and leave us feeling trapped. Many people ask: Is it possible to stop being controlled by anger?
What the World Says
People today give many explanations for anger:
- Some say it’s just a personality trait—you can’t really change it.
- Others think venting anger is healthy, even if it hurts others.
- Still others suggest self-control techniques or stress management to keep it under control.
While some of these ideas may help temporarily, they don’t deal with the deeper issues of the heart.
What the Bible and Jesus Say
The Bible recognizes that anger is real, but it also warns of its dangers. “Human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (James 1:20). Uncontrolled anger often leads to sin, but the Bible also gives a way forward.
- God’s character as an example – The Bible says God is “slow to anger and abounding in love” (Psalm 103:8). As His children, we are called to reflect His patience.
- The Spirit’s power – Through faith in Jesus, believers receive the Holy Spirit, who produces self-control, gentleness, and peace in our lives (Galatians 5:22–23).
- A new heart – Anger flows from within. Jesus changes us at the heart level, giving us forgiveness for past failures and the strength to respond differently.
- Practical steps – The Bible encourages believers to pray, guard their words, reconcile quickly, and walk in humility. Fellowship with other believers in a church setting provides encouragement and accountability as well.
Through Jesus, anger does not have to control us—we can learn patience, self-control, and love.
Your Next Step
If you struggle with anger, know that change is possible. In times when you sense anger arising, pray to Jesus that He will provide you strength and wisdom to have self-control that leads not into anger, but a gentle and kind response. Jesus offers forgiveness for your past outbursts and strength to live with peace in the present.
